Affiliate disclosure
Some links on this page may be affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never affect which tools or programs we pick or how we describe them.
We don’t currently have any affiliate links. This policy applies as soon as we add any, and affiliate or sponsored links will always be clearly labeled. Read our full Affiliate Disclosure & Editorial Policy.
This section is where we’ll share specific tools, programs, and services we recommend for families. It’s kept separate from our guides, which stay neutral and focused on helping you understand your options.
How we choose
- Recommendations are vetted by experienced educators with firsthand knowledge of the programs or services.
- We only include tools and programs our educators would use with their own families.
- Paid or sponsored placements are always clearly labeled.
- Picks are kept separate from our guides, so our neutral guidance is never shaped by a recommendation.
Our criteria
Each recommendation is reviewed against the criteria below. Not every criterion applies equally to every tool, but we look at all of them.
| Criterion | What we look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Educational quality & evidence | Clear learning goals, sound content, and support from research or strong track records where available | Families should be able to trust that time spent on a tool or program helps children learn |
| Firsthand educator experience | Reviewed by experienced educators who have used or closely examined the program or service | Real-world use reveals strengths and problems that marketing materials don’t |
| Age & stage fit | Content and design that match the developmental stage it is meant for | What works for a high schooler rarely works for a preschooler |
| Transparent pricing | Costs, renewals, and cancellation terms that are easy to find and understand | Families shouldn’t face surprise charges or hard-to-cancel subscriptions |
| Privacy & safety | Clear data practices, limited collection of student data, COPPA-aware handling for children under 13, and safe communication features | Children’s personal information deserves strong protection |
| Accessibility & inclusivity | Usable by learners with different needs and backgrounds, with accessibility features where relevant | Every family should be able to benefit |
| Ease of use for families | Simple setup and clear instructions for parents and students | A tool that’s hard to use often goes unused |
| Support & reputation | Responsive help and a solid reputation among families and educators | Families need help when something goes wrong |
| Value for cost | Benefits that justify the price, including free options where they’re a good fit | Budgets matter, and higher cost doesn’t always mean better |
| Independence & no conflicts | Picks made on merit, never because of a commission or payment | Recommendations are only useful if they’re honest |
