Career Technical Education

Career Technical Education (CTE) combines academic learning with hands-on skills for specific careers. CTE is available in many high schools and continues after graduation through certificates, apprenticeships, and technical programs. It can lead directly to work, to further education, or both.

CTE pathways in high school

Many high schools offer CTE pathways, sequences of courses focused on a career area such as health, information technology, engineering, construction, agriculture, business, or the arts. Some schools also offer career academies, regional career centers, or programs shared across districts. Ask your school or district which pathways are available and how students enroll.

Industry certifications

Some programs prepare students to earn industry-recognized certifications, credentials that show employers a student has specific skills. Certifications vary in value by field and region, so it’s worth asking which ones local employers look for.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. Registered apprenticeships follow approved standards and lead to a recognized credential. Some programs offer pre-apprenticeship or youth apprenticeship options for high school students.

Trade and technical schools

Trade and technical schools, along with many community colleges, offer certificate and degree programs in fields such as skilled trades, health care, automotive technology, and information technology. Program length, cost, and outcomes vary, so compare carefully and check accreditation and licensing requirements.

Questions to ask about any CTE program

  • What credential or certification does the program lead to?
  • Does it include hands-on experience, internships, or work-based learning?
  • Do credits transfer to a college if the student wants to continue?
  • What does it cost, and is financial aid or paid training available?
  • How do graduates do in finding related work?
